A lathe milling aluminum

The lathe with 5/8″ endmill plowing through some 1″ 2011 aluminum in vice held in compound to make some D shaped washers. Lathe is Southbend from the 1916.

I’ll have to try that out, usually I use WD40 if I need a good finish or have enough to cut that the chips would weld to the tool.

You should always …
You should always use some type oil with aluminum, just because aluminum is very a stickly metal to cut. Using some type of oil based coolant will prevent some of this from occuring and will prevent the tool from becoming blunt very quickly.

Cool. There’s actually milling attachments for lathes where you could also move the piece up and down.

It doesn’t move up …
It doesn’t move up and down, so it can only mill the size of the tool. I had to grip it in the vise perfectly at the right vertical position.

The vise I used was …
The vise I used was one I made in machine shop in ‘97. I removed the base to the vise, and clamped it on the compound with some allthread and a pair of plates. You can see the top one is held on with a flange nut.
