Elmer Verburg’s ‘BALDY’ My Steam engine 001 (made using a lathe and a mill)

by admin on June 24, 2009

My first go at a steam engine (run on air at this time) It is made from the plans by Elmer for the Baldy engine. Similar in build to his little wobblers, but uses the part spherical piston to create the wobbling action. I have slightly modified the build to suit my taste but have kept the heart of the plan intact.
It runs from 5psi to 30psi and could be better once it is run in. the flywheel and piston were made with the use of the Ball turning tool designed by Steve Bedair.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment.
It took quite a while, never timed it … Too busy enjoying myself making it :-)

You could make this engine any size you like if you had the machinery large enough!

The plan’s are available, search for ELMER VERBURG that should get you to them.

pretty nice. it …
pretty nice. it must of taken a lot of patience to achieve such a beautiful steam engine. but, i am wondering if i could use the same blue prints to make a bigger scaled up version scaled up to about 1:5??? please reply.

Hi,
Glad you like …

Hi,
Glad you like it….I followed the plans for the internal bits, but the outside is all mine.

I like to have an idea and then see if I can make it happen, This one came out just like I had in my head :-)

I’m afraid you can not have this one… :)
It’s a one off, I will never make another the same.
Possibly one day one similar? But not the same.

Thank you for your very kind words.

Thank you.

The valve design is used in a few of Elmers engines. Probably others too?

Hi,
If you look …

Hi,
If you look closely at the picture at 3:17, specifically the steel bar that makes the crankshaft (second componant from the right) you can see a large flat cutout on the top and a small cut out on the oposite side, there is a hole drilled into the smaller cut out half way through the bar. This intersects a hole drilled into the centre of the bar, this is the exhaust port.Visible at 3:37 directly above the inlet tube,a little hole in the crank shaft.

Hope this explains it? :-)

Thank you, I am currently working on some more ideas… They take a little planning, but are half way through!

I have viewed you videos too… I am very impressed by your Sons willingness to learn.

We should hope more youngsters take an interest!

It is not just you. …
It is not just you… I had a bit of an issue with my flywheel mounting choice!
This is only my 3rd attempt at a flywheeled machine, the first two were the treadle/finger engines I have posted too…. Hopefully using all I have learnt I will make a better one next?!

Still, I’m glad you like it.

i like this but its me or your flyweel have a little runout?

Hey Dividedhead,

Hey Dividedhead,
Great project-diary work… truly insightful, which can’t be said about most “how-to” media found online.
In contrast with more common styles, to me your ‘BALDY’ just epitomizes “functional artwork” while makings others feel more like “toys”. I do some jewelry/metalsmithing as a hobby, and your detail & finish work shine… Its like fine jewelry that’s FUN.
You think you’l add a nice boiler?

I PM’d you on madmodder just to chat more about this stuff, if that’s cool w/you.

Dividedhead June 24, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Thank you, do you …
Thank you, do you make anything yourself?
You must like the steam engines with a handle like that!

RamonaSteam June 24, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Nice work.
Nice work.

Very good of you to say so Bagsdad, glad you liked them. Not quite as complex as yours but getting there! There will soon be more to come…. Watch this space, well channel anyway!

The styling on this …
The styling on this engine could not have been achived without the brilliant tool design by Steve Bedair… visit his site for the tool plans… Credit where it is due.
