No problem in …
No problem in turning a ball using the skew chisel like a scraper and than sandpapering it for a while.
All that should have been done on late by using the tool.
The ball is not parted. I very much doubt that this ball would roll in a straigt line on the ground. If it were parted and rolled on the floor it would wobble.

you got the ball(Z), I have never seen anyone underhand skew turn before. Holy ! it was there along at the headstock, but , I never knew you could do that. To me, that is ballzy and control and a lesson to me to keep learning. Thank you Lathe Master

I sometimes make what I call ‘ On the ball awards’ which I give to people who I think deserve them. I make the base like a trophy base, put a nice finish on it and a brass plate with the persons name. I also for my sons baseball coaches made them and painted the ball to look like a baseball. Their make great gifts and everyone loves them.
Sorry I don’t. You …
Sorry I don’t. You won’t get much of a new lath for 100.00 but keep checking the local newspaper under tools and machinery and sooner or later you will find some good deals on a used lathe. just make sure you check it running and there is not a lot of vibration. Good Luck,Dave I will have the set up and1ist part before u put the wood on the lath soon
Wooden balls are …
Wooden balls are useful for making muzzle loading “ball starters”, just to give a modest example.
Otherwise, making wooden balls at the lathe with no jig anyone is a strong challenge, for the latheman.

David, ihope you read this, you are a craftsman nice job, try this next, after you get your blank into a cylinder part it, chuck half of the cylinder, hollow it out on the side you just parted same to other side, make them join like a box and lid, line up the grain and put on the lathe between the centers, then make your perfect ball and it will be hollow, and because its hollow you can reverse chuck it and turn off the pip and sand easier.
